Album Info:

The oldest statue of a public figure in Cape Town is that of Sir George Gray, Governor to the Cape 1854-1861, and is to be found in the company gardens at the top of Adderley Street in Cape Town. Sir George was also the foundation stone layer of the Cape Town Public library, to which he donated 5000 volumes, the collection which holds his name today. The one and a half life-sized, marble statue is of Sir George holding a book. Sir George Gray was also Governor general of NZ in 1854
