Album Info:
A stone building was constructed here in 1860-61 but it was never fully completed. The male half of the prison was built, the matching female half never started. After several escapes - given how soft this rock is, I imagine a teaspoon was sufficient - the outer walls were reinforced with steel boiler plates from the wreck of the SS Admella, which ran aground in 1859. The gaol was closed between 1870 and 1872, and finally abandoned in 1881. Parts of it were demolished and used for road gravel in the local area. Most of the building layout survives, marked out by remnant walls only a foot or two high.
