"African slaves were the foundation of the rice culture. Many had experiences in rice production dating back to their native land. A significant number of the tools used at Hofwyl-Broadfield and elsewhere on the rice coast were of African origin. Because they were able to withstand the heat, humidity and malarial environment where whites could not, the slaves constituted perhaps as much as 90 percent of the rice coast population."
