"This served as the main defense structure of the fort. In the event of a heavy raid where enemy penetration seemed inevitable, soldiers could retreat to the second floor of the blockhouse, pull the ladders inside, and barricade the doors. From the second and third floors, soldiers could continue their defense by firing muskets through loopholes in the four-inch-thick bulletproof walls."
