Album Info:
schwechat creek has a history of sluicing logs from the vienna woods towards the urban region around vienna that goes back to the 17th century. eventually, there were 104 km (65 mi) of torrents and creeks used for the purpose. the building in the picture is the main sluice on the creek. it was built in 1756 and is the only preserved construction of its kind in europe. in front of the wall lies a retention basin capable of containing almost 82,000 cubic metres of water (that's almost 2.9 million cubic feet). the two "doors" and the overflows were used to control the flow of water downriver and to monitor the amount of logs allowed through. the trees were felled in winter cut into pieces of 1 m length, and piled up beside the creek. in spring, the meltwater was retained, the doors were opened and the sluicing could begin. the system was in operation from 1667 (with a simple earth dam at the beginning) till 1939.
