Historian Americo Lugo, in his "Historia de la Republica Dominicana" (History of the Dominican Republic), indicates that the first settlement in Monte Cristi was the work of Nicolas de Ovando (1502 1509), who arrived from Spain as governor of the island. However, the most accepted version is that Monte Cristi was officially founded in 1533, by an order of the Metropoli, by a group of sixty families from the Canary Islands, led by the Spaniard Juan de Bolanos, an event that is confirmed by Fernandez Oviedo. El historiador Americo Lugo en su "Historia de la Republica Dominicana" indica que los primeros pobladores de Montecristi fue el trabajo de Nicolas de Ovando (1502 1509), quien llego desde España como gobernador de la isla. La mas acceptable version es que Montecristi fue oficialmente fundada en 1533, por la orden de la Metropoli, por un grupo de 60 familias de las Islas Canarias, al mando del Español Juan de Bolaños, un evento cofirmado por Fernando Oviedo
