Album Info:

Congress appropriated funds to construct the Point Reyes Lighthouse in 1855. The lighthouse structure was constructed of cast iron. The lighthouse structure, Fresnel lens, and clockwork mechanism were transported to Point Reyes by ship and landed at Drake's Beach. They were transported to the headlands by ox cart. They were lowered from the cliff top to the lighthouse location over a six-week period. The Point Reyes Lighthouse was finally completed and first shown its light on December 1, 1870.
