Album Info:
(DSC04639 ) THE HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF PAOAY LAKE: The “Pueblo” of San Juan de Sahagun, the “Missing Town” of Ilocos Norte, disappeared & slipped into the bowels of the earth when a titanic land displacement happened in the Ilocos Region during the Spanish Regime. An interesting account of this awesome event was written by Reymundo Magisa in a pamphlet entitled “ Succeso raro de tres volcanos, dos de fuego y uno de agua que rebentaron … Enero deste ano 1641 a un mismo tiempo en differentes partes de estas islas Filipinas.” When a terrific storm raged over the Ilocos Region accompanied by thunder & lightning, a frightful earthquake shook the bowels of the earth, causing it to open, swallowing up mountains, including the three Poblaciones that were at the base of the mountain. The outburst of water that was violently forced out from the underground, by the impact of the colossal earth displacement, rose several meters high and the former site of the mountain and the “Pueblos” disappeared in the wink of an eye, so to say, and a vast lake was formed. It is now popularly called Paoay Lake. This phenomenon was investigated by order and commissioned by Arce. Bishop of Cebu and Governor of the archbishopric of Manila into the phenomenon occurred. Those who confirmed and wrote about this event were the following: Fr. Gonzalo de Palma, OSA, 1641; Fr. Joaquin Martinez de Zuniga; Fr. Buzeta, Fr. San Francisco de Asis(1661-1712); Rev. Fr. N. Saderra Maso, S.J. 1903. (Taken from a site marker)
