Album Info:
"Ivatan" houses in Batanes (the northernmost province of the Philippines) are mostly made of thick stone walls. The province is visited with many typhoons and to protect them from the strong winds, the local people (also known as Ivatan) build these kind of houses with very thick walls.

This 81-year old lady is Florestina Estrella who lives in this Ivatan house. She was very happy to hear us speak to her in Ilonggo (a Philippine dialect spoken in Western Visayas). The last time she spoke Ilonggo was when she was 7 years old. At that time she was with her parents in Silay City, Negros Occidental, Philippines. Miss Estrella related this to us when we visited her in Batanes last February 16, 2008.

They certainly were using common sense. I cannot imagine how much work must go into putting each stone into just the right place to build the walls. All the shapes are different, so it must take a lot of time and patience. I guess the only thing that might blow off would be the roof. Good luck in the challenge.
