Album Info:

(DSC09793) A MEMORIAL FOR A FULFILLED PROMISE: On October 20, 1944, Gen. Douglas MacArthur, together with the leaders of the Commonwealth and a combined alliance of Philippine and American armed forces, waded in these hallowed shores in Leyte to strike the first blow toward the liberation of the Philippines. After those long years, General MacArthur finally returned. Much blood may have been spilled, treasures expended and tears shed before the promise made in Corregidor was fulfilled. But return he did. The landing in Leyte by the armed forces, however, was not merely a symbolic act toward liberation, it was a manifestation of a united effort by both forces to free this nation from the yoke of imperialism, for if there were those who promised to return to fight another day, there were even more who elected to stay and face the enemy. Let this Landing Memorial therefore be a tribute to the American fighting men who crossed the vast Pacific in fulfillment of a promise to return. Let this memorial be an offering to the Filipinos who even as they kept fighting the enemy, never wavered in their faith that their waiting will not be in vain. And let this memorial be a dedication to all those who laid down their lives for the liberation of this nation. Let it be a renewal of the Filipino people's bond of friendship with the people of the United States of America, and re-affirmation of our nations' commitment to freedom, liberty and peace. Signed by: Ferdinand E. Marcos, President of the Philippines

    • Really wonderful words from then President Marcos. It reflected a day and time when Americans kept their word. I'm not so sure about anyone anymore, politically that is. But we can still have faith in the people. ..Betty
