Our tour began in the Upper Agora (lower part of this map) and then proceded down to the lower part of the ancient city along Curetes Street, one of its main throughfares. Ephesus was built between and up the sides of Mount Koressos and Mount Pion. The city had a population of 250,000 at its peak in the 2nd-3rd C AD. At that time it was a port on the Aegean but today the sea has receded leaving Ephesus 5 km inland.
