My father was one of the prisoners-of-war (Australian AIF Regiment) who helped cut out this road by their sweat, blood and tears. How he survived was by his mate holding him up when the Japanese guards passed by - he would have been shot if he had fallen from exhaustion. It looks so beautiful - but you would never guess its history if you hadn't known.
