One of the finest architectural monuments of the XIX century (architect A.Montferrand), the former principal cathedral of the Russian capital, the largest cathedral in town able to accommodate about 10,000 audience. The cathedral is graced with 112 solid granite columns weighing up to 114 tons each, and about 400 relieves and bronze sculptures. The observation platform on the colonnade provides a magnificent view of the city

Do they still forbid picture taking on the catwalk around the tower as they did during the Cold War? I remember crawling through quite a labyrinth of stairways to get to the view. And at the top, backlit by a blaze of light, comrade grandmother held between her outstretched hands a roll of exposed film as a warning to those who would defy the rules. I suppose today with satellite pictures of every square inch of the earth, such rules are obsolete.
