(DSC09634) Ifugaos, originating in Taiwan, settled in the Philippines approximately four thousand years ago. They occupy the current territory of the province of Ifugao in the north of the island of Luzon. These tribes of former warriors cutters of heads, now peaceful, maintain the famous rice plantations in terraces which their ancestors built here more than two thousand years to exploit all the plots of land. One can describe them as the eighth wonder of the world. The religion and the Pantheon of Ifugaos constitute one of the most elaborate sets of beliefs of Asia. The rituals and ceremonies associated with the culture of rice occupy a central place there. A very popular form of ifugao art is sculpture. The majority of the sculptures are made out of wood. In the rituals and ceremonies which call upon the gods and divinities, the bulul is the most common traditional sculpture. Through his intermediary, one asks for a heavy crop, the revenge or the cure of a patient. The bululs are anthropomorphic representations of the rice divinities which had the capacity to protect harvest and its abundance. The bululs are usually made per pairs but there are no rules as for the sex or the position. It is difficult to distinguish the male from the female. They generally represent human beings sitted or upright. They usually measure between 30 and 60 cm height. During the ceremonies, the bululs received offerings and were coated with blood of animals (chickens or pigs) sacrificed. The blood of pig is symbol of capacities, richness and prosperity. They were then preserved in the houses where soot added the black patina to these sculptures generally made out of wood of narra, symbol of richness, happiness and wellbeing.
