Album Info:

A chilly and misty day in November 2005, taken with my first digital camera. This is the entrance to the Fort; the ancient North East gateway. The fort is marked on the map as "Cadbury castle", being situated at the village of South Cadbury, and is 11 miles from Glastonbury, the Isle of Avalon. There is very little doubt that this is the ancient Camelot, but it is not of the type of "Castle" which comes to mind when talking of them. Near here was found a hasty grave of men and boys, evidently fallen in battle. They maybe the graves of the fallen of the battle of Camlann, Arthur's last battle which could have been fought merely to defend this castle from the Saxon invaders. A nearby river is actually called the "Cam", with two villages: Queen Camel and West Camel, both post dating Camelot, nearby. The documented battle (Mount Badon, or "Mons Badonicus" in which Arthur beat the Saxons is not far away, just over the border into the next county of Wiltshire, at Liddington castle, another fort. It stands on a sort of dark age "front line" between the Saxons and the Britons/Celts. The earliest reference to this place being Camelot, has now been pushed back to an earlier time than that of John Leland, writing in 1542, who was thought to be the first to call this place "Camelot", writing of it as such from his study of folklore, etc., but now we know it was named "Camelot" from a much earlier date. This place was probably Arthur's home base.
