Anti-Aircraft & Search Light Command Bunker Also know as 'The Admiral's Bunker' or 'Yamamoto Bunker'. This is the bunker where Admiral Yamamoto supposedly spent his last night before being shot down over Bougainville. This is unlikely. History This bunker was constructed during the war by the Japanese occupation of Rabaul. The fact was that this bunker was the command bunker for the Navy's searchlight and anti-aircraft defenses. Opening As Museum Prior to the 1994 eruption, a small war museum opposite the New Guinea Club on the corner of Central Avenue and Clarke Street. Outside was a Type 95 tank, anti-aircraft gun and a howitzer. Inside is a collection of odds and ends in two control rooms; Japanese maps can still be seen on the walls. Today During the eruption, the bunker was covered in ash, and is rarely visited. It as been dug out, but all the items from the museum have been moved, to the Kokopo War Museum. and New Guinea Club. Only the 25mm triple anti-aircraft gun remains today. It is open to visitors but is empty inside.
