I need to brush up on my Hawaiin folklore, but is this where there is a story about a princess? Mokolii Island, is 12.5 acres in size and lies 600 yards offshore from Kualoa State Park on windward Oahu. It is a small butte-shaped volcanic island, known as a sea stack. Mokoli'i was once a basalt pinnacle on a ridge, which was subsequently cut away by marine erosion. The basalt probably originated from the eruption of Koolau Volcanic vents. The island is also known as Chinaman's Hat because of its resemblance to the straw hats worn by Chinese immigrants who worked in the sugar plantations in Hawai'i during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. According to local legend, the island received its Hawaiian name when Hiiaka, sister of the fire goddess, Pele, killed a lizard-like creature called a moko, and left the body at the foot of the Koolau Mountains. The island is believed to be the tail of the creature sticking out of the water. There, I just answered my own question, it's not about the Princess. Thanks for sharing Clark. I love what we do to each other's albums, you know our long interesting comments.......your friend, Marion
