Album Info:

(DSC09794) The American Battle Monuments Commission is responsible to the people of the United States for the appropriate commemoration of the achievements & sacrifices of our Armed Forces in battle. This has been accomplished primarily through erection of monuments & battlefield cemeteries on foreign soil, and of memorials on Unites States soil. The Commission presently administers & maintains in 9 foreign countries 23 military cemeteries, 11 separate monuments and 2 bronze tablets; it also maintains 3 memorials on United States soil. A total of 124,909 Dead of the Mexican War, World War I & World War II are interred in these cemeteries on foreign soil. In addition the names of the 94,088 missing of the World War I, World War II, Korea and Vietnam are engraved at either in these cemeteries or 3 memorials on United States soil. The remains of 17,206 servicemen & women who gave their lives on World War II are interred in this Manila cemetery. In addition, 36,279 Missing of World War II whose remains were not recovered or identified or who were lost or buried at sea are commemorated by name on the walls of the memorial here. Most of them gave their lives in the defense or the liberation of the Philippines, or in the regions from Australia northward to Japan, eastward to the Palau Islands and westward to China, Burma & India. The servicemen & women resting in this cemetery represent approximately 39 percent of the War Dead who were temporarily interred in these regions. The remains of the other 69 percent were returned to the United States at the request of next of kin for burial in national or private cemeteries. (Note: Photo description was taken from the ABMC marker itself.)
