Album Info:
The Indian tiger (Panthera tigris), also known as the Royal Bengal tiger, is the main subspecies of tigers in the world. Tiger is the National Animal of India. In the early part of the 20th century, there were approximately 45,000 tigers in the wild in India. Hunting as a sport by the erstwhile maharajhas and the British elite in India, in the early years of the last century, has reduced the tiger population in India to about 1400 now. Alarmed by the reduction, the Government of India set up an agency called the 'Project Tiger' in 1972 to create National Parks and tiger reserves to protect the tigers and to create national awareness. Despite the continued pressure on their hunting habitat, and an ever prevalent struggle between the game wardens and the poachers, the tiger population in India has managed to hover around the 1400 mark. There are currently 29 tiger reserves in the country with an area of about 40,000 sq.km. The tiger is an endangered species in India, and requires constant vigil on the part of conservatory authorities.

Suresh, this is a marvelous animal and thank you for sharing so much interesting background on the tiger population in India and the steps to protect those left. I am so appreciative of your congratulations on my recent POTD on the Outdoors page. As always, I am almost as amazed that one of my photos was chosen to showcase as I am about how they are ever able to choose one from among the many great photos on WS.

Great shot and project tiger is doing a great job. Unfortunately however their records indicate that there has been an alarming reduction in their numbers within the last decade.

As a cat freak, this is the ultimate. I sometimes think I was a big cat in another life. My computer got a virus, and I can't use it. I am using my husband's computer now. He took mine to be fixed, and they couldn't fix it, so, it looks as if I'll get a new one. If computers are so smart, why can't they do diagnostics and repairs on themselves?
