She will help you." and "First marry for money, then marry for love" These are phenonmenal quotes for a Victorian woman born in 1853 - they are not shocking today but remember the times she lived in. In 1963, Alva's youngest son, Harold Vanderbilt, assisted the Preservation Society of Newport County financially with a large grant to acquire the Marble House which had been sold by his mother more than thirty years earlier. Successful in their bid, the property was converted into a museum.
